FIPPA Broken Down
Notice:
When students are required to use social media in the classroom, it is the role of the instructor to make sure that students remain cyber safe. Through written consent forms, students receive detailed information on how to be safe online and the purpose of their project.

Knowledge:
It is important that as an educator that we take the time to ensure that our students are safe online and in the classroom. Students should be told ahead of time what they are consenting to by participating in social media in the classroom.

Consent:
Consent should be reached with all students before an instructor carries on with the lesson//project. It should be clear and defined for students what the purpose of their consent is used for and what laws are involved in cyber safety.

Reflection:
After the first class, it was made very clear to me the importance of keeping students safe online while they are in the classroom. I believe that especially during a time when most students are relying on online resources during their education, they have the right to know what risks are developed when learning online. Many children may not understand the concept of consent, and this is a crucial opportunity to introduce the importance of consent in our lives – online and in person. I remember when I was in elementary school learning that our accounts were being monitored, and I felt as though my privacy was invaded. Although I was feeling that way, it was better knowing that and consenting to it, rather than not knowing and feeling even more invaded. As a future teacher, I am glad that there are so many online resources. I want to make sure that my future students feel safe and most importantly comfortable participating in class using an online aspect. Technology is involved in our everyday lives, more so as we progress technologically, and that means that we need to pay close attention to the sites we use as resources for our students, who without our guidance and knowledge, are extremely vulnerable online.
